I recomend that you check the condition of the taper on the main mixture valve for excessive wear which you well reconnize as a grove and the condition this valve seat and look around the hole which mates with the needles taper that has damaged in the area of the round grove.and look for any movement of these two parts which will allow the tapered surface and the orfice hole in the mateing part. any of the above will make it very difficult to obtain steady rythem like running of your engine when it was new.the orifice will proubly be brass and will have a screw driver slot in it.It will proubly have a stiff fiber washer sealing it to the zink carburator body "if there is no seal between these two parts don"t expect very good performance of your mixture of screw. There should be some packing " string and graffite" around mixture screw beneith the brass nut.
This packing keeps the gasoline in and the dirt out if you don"t have any it can be found in the plumbing section of most hardware stores. Very inportant This ajustment must be made very very gently so you don"t get the damage you have complained about,If you can not get to the hardware store to get packing do this get some cotton string satuated with grease and assembly it into the carburitor body and now take a small wrench and tighten the gland nut until it is difficult to assemble with your fingers. now take the screw and screw it in with your fingers. When you touch brass seat stop. now back the screw off about 1 1/2 revoutions this should get the engine to start of course you may have to fine tune " screw it in till the engine slow
down or unscrew it untill it recovers and stops"
The other screw is the air ajustment provisions for low idle, take this screw out and check for obstrution if you find nothing with it screw it back in with fingers untill it stops and back it out 1 revolution.your engine is now ready to start. botton line don:t let the guy in the store sell you another carburator yet.
if this dosen"t work let me know.

Sincerly
